Our theology degree often covers many ‘ologies’. But we wanted to highlight some different topics posed to our students at our latest academic conference to give you a glimpse into both the theory and practice of our degree.
Bible Translation
Have you ever really thought about your Bible translation…or even cared? That was one of the topics our Year One students covered as they started to wrestle with studying the Bible and the different approaches. Covering the history, intentions and implications of different Bible translations over the years the students have been able to build a steady foundation for their future studies. With such an ecumenical community there is a wide breadth of views and we love growing together as a community whilst we grapple with the Word and strengthen each other in our understanding of it.
Leading Teams
Is confidence key to leading others, or is that missing the point? The topic of leading teams was one of the more practical modules the Year Two students discussed this September. Analysing different team models, the students were able to discuss and troubleshoot theories and relate these to their own work placements. Directing those older than you, the subtle differences between paid and volunteer workers, and team growth are some of the aspects of leadership that our students discuss as they look to build a cohesive team within their ministries. This topic has proved to be a favourite of many alumni over the years, and we see its importance growing as churches increasingly struggle to create and grow youth teams.
Dissertation
‘Dissertation’ was the word of the week for our Year Threes as they all begin to discern their chosen research project for the year. In collaboration with ForMission College and Reign Ministries staff, lots of time was given to the individuals to help them flesh out their thoughts and questions concerning their research ideas. The process will then begin to further refine their research questions and then assign relevant staff and lecturers to help supervise them throughout the year. Past subjects have included: exploring the impact of the pandemic on children and youth provision, the role of the Holy Spirit within youth ministry, how to engage with a local LGBTQ+ community, and appropriateness of models of discipleship.
