University and Youth Ministry are just for young people… Right?

We recently asked one of our most mature students to tell us a little of his story and how he came to be studying with Reign Ministries, especially since he left school over 20 years ago.  We love to be reminded that God’s plan have no expiration date and sometimes do not match the assumptions we have in our heads.

Hi Everyone… My name is Anthony, I am 38 and after a period of 22 years I felt that I was being called by God to return to study.

Anxious of studying again…

I was certainly feeling very anxious about returning to studying, attending university and lectures after an extended period away. I had so many thoughts and feelings going round in my head that I was finding them all extremely hard to process and understand. Several of my friends had recently enrolled on different university courses and they were several years younger than I was. I do what I always do when I need answers to questions…I prayed. I prayed that if God wanted me to go to university then He would show me in some way that this opportunity was from Him and not a 5-minute idea that would go away. I also chatted to some friends who are very well-established Christians and my Church pastor about whether this was the right decision to make.

What challenges have I faced…

There were several obstacles that I saw as challenges when I knew that this opportunity of returning to study was from God. A BIG challenge was my age. I thought that university was for school leavers and people who were half my age; how wrong I was!  I put a call out to Pete who is the Degree team leader at Reign Ministries, and he began to guide me through the application process. Although the application process was simple and straightforward it was still a daunting experience as I was stepping out into the unknown and taking a life changing step in my walk with God by applying to study on this BA course. There was also the challenge of how studying, being away from home to attend conferences and still fulfilling my role as a volunteer youth worker at my Church would work out. Again, I did what I always do, prayed and asked God to show me a way forward. He did not disappoint. He showed me, moved me, and blessed me in many ways and ways that I had never imagined.

For anyone that is thinking ‘is this the right time’ for me to return to study or ‘am I too old to do this’ I will say this; if you put your trust in God then He will not disappoint you.

How I have overcome these challenges…

When I began my first year’s study, I was only offered a 12month placement with the Church I was currently worshipping at. I would have liked a placement that lasted the length of my course, but I was not going to grumble. I just put my faith 100% in God as I knew He would work this out. There was also a 4 ½ hour commute from my current address to the conference which I was not looking forward to, but I knew there was a reason I was being prompted and that reason was God. Fast forward 18 months and my circumstances could not be more different. God moved me 141 miles to the other side of the country, during the summer of 2020 I had the privilege of getting married and I have been blessed with an amazing Church and leadership team who have welcomed me with open arms. They have also given me a placement that will come to an end when I complete my studies and graduate in 2022. That is also a noticeably BIG year for me as I turn 40 too.

For anyone that is thinking ‘is this the right time’ for me to return to study or ‘am I too old to do this’ I will say this; if you put your trust in God then He will not disappoint you. Hebrews 11:1 says, ‘Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see’. I am completely in awe of the work that God is doing in my life and looking back I have the confidence, belief, and compassion for other people that I never thought I would have.
