Could The Degree Grow Your Faith… Like Pizza?

At Reign Ministries we desire to enable our students to not only understand the Bible and the practicalities of youth work, but also to grow in their faith and relationship with Jesus. We asked friend of Reign, Megan, how she thinks the degree course can facilitate this growth.

In my house we eat pizza every Saturday. At first we thought we’d get tired of having the same thing week after week. But what we found is that after several months, we still look forward to it every time!

Now, you might be thinking what does this have to do with a degree in youth ministry? Hopefully that will be become clearer shortly, because I think that the unique opportunity for spiritual formation that this course has to offer is a lot like how we view pizza.

At this stage in life, when you’re considering what course to study or career path to pursue, you might also want to take into account how your faith impacts these decisions. You’ll find many people and institutions that will steer you towards breaking down the things you’ve adopted in your faith journey and working to rebuild your faith from the ground up, a knowledge-based and intellectually-driven process. It’s like looking at a pizza and taking it apart piece by piece, asking at every stage “Why shape the base this way or put this topping on?”.

Within our community at Reign Ministries what we value more is your personal relationship with Jesus, the richness and intimacy of really knowing Him and being fully known by Him, and journeying into these deeper places within safe relationships. So we read the Bible, dialogue, share openly, pray with one another – all things that deepen our faith – but we do them with the questions in mind of “What does this actually mean?” and “What difference will believing it and putting it into practice make to my life?” It’s a personal and relational approach to spiritual development, a lot like looking at a pizza and thinking, “What a comforting and satisfying meal that fills me with pleasure!” instead of picking apart its various elements and critiquing their presence.

Reign

Like a Saturday night pizza, you are a beautiful canvas for God’s goodness. And while the metaphor might be strange, I hope the message is clear: Your growth and maturity in faith are important to us as you carry on learning, studying and investing in young people. We hope that you won’t just leave the course with greater knowledge, but with a depth of relationship and solid practices in place for a lifetime of discipleship – yours and hopefully many more following in your footsteps.
