A Father’s Perspective…

Last week we heard from Sam about his journey through applying for and doing the degree. This week we hear from his Dad, David about his own perspective on Sam’s journey.

How did you find the application process as Sam was applying for the degree?

For a year or so, Sam had wanted to be a history teacher and was beginning to get involved in some youth work, particularly through Boys Brigade. I think initially we were a bit surprised about Sam wanting to do a degree in Christian youth work as although we could see he clearly enjoyed it and was good at it, it’s quite a big leap to enrol for a degree. We also knew from leading churches that many churches relied on volunteers to lead their youth work so had a concern for whether he would be able to find employment afterwards. We wanted to support him in this and particularly as we had already had a Reign placement student at our church, we were really pleased that he wanted to be with Reign so that part of it was the easiest for us.

We were particularly impressed by the mentoring input from the Reign staff. Sam was not only taught Christian living – he also caught it from them.

Did you notice and growth or transformation in Sam during this time?

When Sam left to join up with Reign and start his degree we were intrigued to see how things would develop. He clearly enjoyed youth work but we felt that perhaps he enjoyed doing youth work as opposed to Christian youth work. Over the time of his degree, we saw an amazing transformation. His faith grew and deepened in a wonderful way. We could see that it wasn’t just his mind that was developing, but he was in a place where God was moving and Sam was learning to respond to God in ways that he hadn’t done when previously doing youth work. We were particularly impressed by the mentoring input from the Reign staff. Sam was not only taught Christian living – he also caught it from them.

Would you recommend Reign Ministries to someone who is thinking about a degree in youth ministry?

Having seen the change in Sam’s life as well as having had students from different institutions in churches we have led, we think that the Reign approach is very special. The times together on conference are key to both learning and as important spiritual development and transformation. It is exciting to see such change in someone in your family and we have been privileged to share in this journey with Sam. We are so pleased that he has been able to stay connected with Reign. Having initially had a Reign placement student in our church and then seeing our son graduate with Reign, I have been really pleased to have a new connection with Reign as a trustee and am glad of this opportunity to serve and support the organisation in this way.

Reign Ministries And The Hybrid Learning Model

Updated: 6 Oct 2021 | Posted by: Hannah Owen

Last year (2020/21) saw students across the country being sent away from their universities to adopt a new way of studying from home.  And whilst Reign Ministries embraced online learning, it wasn’t something we were unfamiliar with. For Reign Ministries, the concept of a hybrid learning model is not something that has just emerged in […]
