Great thoughts for us to take in - really encouraging to hear how God is working in you! Gives hope to all who want to see change in others but have only the ability to change themselves!

Good thoughts, Matt! Looking back I wish I had had the opportunity to wed study and practical ministry more. I'm a little biased, but I think you are getting a rich experience as you are forced to practice your Theology.

What do you think about the whole ''God thing''?
Do you feel comfortable in the presence of christians?
Why are you here? (in Costa, Greenhouse or other social christian environment)
Do you feel like God loves you, if He is real at all?

and so many more. I feel you just have to be real and feel for them. Really care for them and show them that God is real combined with genuine interest and personal care.

How to train conversations?!? Do it over and over and over again. Practice makes perfect!!!

Great thoughts so far everyone! Thanks for sharing them. Your thought was good, Brenda, because in addition to having questions that will start good spiritual conversations, we are thinking through, "How do we not force people into making faith decisions, but still create choice points?" It seems like Jesus was really good at accepting people, but not letting them sit on the fence for very long. So we find ourselves also asking questions like, "It seems like every person needs to 1) experience God 2) have some information about him and 3) choose with their will to follow him. Which one of these 3 do you feel you need before you would be ready to commit to God?"

I wouldn't go up to strangers and ask this or anything, but I've found that the old "if you were to stand before God and He asked why He should let you into heaven, what would you say" has been extremely beneficial for defining what a person really believes... especially when they generally think they're okay with God. It allows me to talk about how religion gives a bunch of answers related to doing good things, but the Bible teaches it's only through Christ. On more than one occasion, this has led to the realization that they're holding on to contradictory values: "I'm a good person and deserve to go to heaven" and "I believe the Bible is inspired." A couple of years ago I asked this question of a friend who thought she was trusting Christ, but she gave me a very "religious" answer. With a smile, I called her out on it, and it led to a genuine repentance and submission experience a couple of weeks later as she thought about it. Her husband came to Christ a few months later, with the same question forming an important component in his understanding. So it might not exactly be a "conversation starter," but I can't pass up the chance to share what a useful question it is!
